Opalescence PF teeth whitening gels are professional whitening treatments designed for use with custom-fitted whitening trays.
Follow these simple steps to help achieve a brighter, whiter smile.
1. Prepare Your Whitening Trays
Brush and floss your teeth before beginning your whitening treatment.
Make sure your whitening trays are clean and dry.
Remove the cap from your Opalescence whitening syringe.
2. Apply the Whitening Gel
Apply a thin, continuous line of whitening gel along the front-facing inner surface of each whitening tray, approximately halfway up the tooth compartments.
The manufacturer recommends approximately one-third to one-half of a syringe per tray, depending on the size of your tray.
Remember: less is more.
Avoid overfilling your whitening trays, as excess gel can come into contact with your gums and cause irritation.
3. Insert Your Whitening Trays
Carefully place your whitening trays over your teeth.
Gently press or lightly tap the trays into position to ensure a comfortable fit.
If any excess whitening gel comes out around the edges, carefully remove it using a soft toothbrush or tissue.
4. How Long Should I Wear My Whitening Trays?
The recommended treatment time depends on the strength of Opalescence whitening gel you are using.
| Opalescence Gel | Recommended Treatment Time |
|---|---|
| Opalescence PF 10% CP | 8–10 hours or overnight |
| Opalescence PF 15% CP | 4–6 hours |
| Opalescence PF 20% CP | 2–4 hours |
| Opalescence PF 35% CP | 30–60 minutes |
CP = Carbamide Peroxide
Always check the concentration printed on your whitening syringe before starting treatment.
Do not exceed the recommended treatment time.
5. Remove & Rinse
Once your whitening treatment is complete:
- Carefully remove your whitening trays.
- Gently brush away any remaining whitening gel using a soft toothbrush.
- Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water, taking care not to swallow the gel.
- Clean your whitening trays using a soft toothbrush and cool or lukewarm water.
- Allow the trays to dry before storing them in a clean container.
Avoid using hot water, as this may damage or distort your whitening trays.
6. Repeat Your Whitening Treatment
Continue your whitening treatment according to the instructions supplied with your Opalescence product or the schedule recommended by your dentist.
The number of treatments required can vary depending on your starting tooth shade, the concentration of gel and your desired results.
Do not increase the amount of gel or extend the recommended treatment time to speed up the whitening process.
Helpful Tips
Use the correct amount of gel. Applying too much whitening gel will not produce faster results and may increase gum irritation.
Avoid eating or drinking while whitening. Do not eat, drink or smoke while wearing your whitening trays.
Limit staining foods and drinks. Reducing coffee, tea, red wine and other strongly coloured foods and drinks during your whitening course may help maintain your results.
Look after your whitening trays. Always clean your trays after use and store them in a clean, dry container.
Store your whitening gel correctly. Follow the storage instructions on your packaging and keep your syringes away from excessive heat and direct sunlight.
Tooth Sensitivity
Some people may experience temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation during whitening.
If sensitivity occurs:
- Stop whitening temporarily.
- Avoid extending your treatment time.
- Speak to your dentist about adjusting your whitening schedule.
- Consider using a toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth.
If you experience significant or persistent sensitivity or gum irritation, discontinue treatment and consult your dentist.
